Overview

Vernon Township, home to approximately 25,000 residents, is nestled in the northeast corner of Sussex County, New Jersey. Flanked by Wantage Township to the west, Hardyston Township to the south, and West Milford in neighboring Passaic County to the east, Vernon shares its northern border with New York State.

Spanning nearly 70 square miles, more than 40% of Vernon Township is preserved open space. The township is crisscrossed by both federal and state parks and includes a scenic 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Distinct communities within Vernon include Glenwood, Highland Lakes, McAfee, Vernon Valley, Barry Lakes, and Lake Wallkill.

Known as New Jersey’s four-season recreation community, Vernon is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Winter brings skiers and snowboarders, while the warmer months welcome hikers, golfers, mountain bikers, kayakers, campers, picnickers, and families seeking fresh air and adventure.
