Township Clerk

The Vernon Township Clerk is appointed by the township council and serves an initial term of three years. The word “clerk” is perhaps a misnomer as people tend to equate the position with that of a low-level general office worker. Within the context of the public sector and, more specifically, municipal government, the clerk is a senior official responsible for a staggering amount of duties—duties that run the gamut from granting a bingo license to certifying election results.

For starters, the clerk’s office is the public face of local government. Have a question? A complaint? Need direction about how to address a government-related matter? Because the office of the clerk is involved in nearly every aspect of daily operations in the township, chances are it has the answer or can tell you who does.

More specifically, the clerk’s office handles the following:

  • serves as the custodian of records and in that capacity, handlesOPRA requests for the Township of Vernon
  • issues liquor licenses, taxi/limousine permits, long term rental registrations, peddler/solicitor permits, raffle/bingo licenses
  • acts as the township’s registrar of vital statistics and as such, registers births, issues marriage and civil union licenses, records deaths and issues certified copies of same if the event occurred in Vernon Township (open by appointment only Monday, Tuesday and Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m)
  • as secretary to the governing body, prepares and maintains all meeting minutes, ordinances and resolutions
  • as election official, processes candidate petitions for municipal offices, reviews petitions, designates polling places, certifies local election results
  • maintains all deeds and leases of property owned by the township
  • acts as the depository for and custodian of all performance/surety bonds
  • conducts searches and issues certificates as to liability for assessment for municipal improvements

What you are unable to find at the Vernon Township Clerk’s Office can probably be found at the Sussex County Clerk’s Office . Located on Spring Street in Newton, the county clerk provides the following:

  • recording of and access to public land records
  • recording of business trade names
  • processing of passport applications
  • election services
  • registration of physician licenses and religious corporations
  • issuance of veteran identification cards
  • access to limited genealogical archives
