Township begins work on the NJDEP Watershed Grant
The Township began work on the Black Creek Watershed Protection
and Restoration Plan (WPRP) Grant with a WPRP kick-off
meeting on October 3rd, 2005. Click here to view the meeting
minutes. Invitations to the meeting were sent to potential
stakeholders in the watershed including Township officials,
local environmental groups, the Vernon Chamber of Commerce,
and other parties interested in the Black Creek.
The
next watershed grant meeting will be conducted on November
30, 2005 (Wednesday) at 2:00 P.M. at the Vernon Township
Municipal Building and is open to the public. This meeting
will be the Regional Stormwater Management Plan Committee
Kick-Off and the focus of the meeting is to form the Regional
Stormwater Management Plan Committee (RSWMPC). Initiations
to this public meeting were also sent to potential stakeholders,
and this meeting will be advertised via public notice
in the New Jersey Herald and the Sunday New Jersey Herald.
Residents are urged to get involved with the planning
process, attend the meetings, and check this web page
for regular updates.
The
technical work on the grant is being performed by SGE,
LLC of Branchburg, NJ. GSE is a multidisciplinary engineering
consulting firm with experience in water resources management,
including the preparation of Regional Stormwater Management
Plans. The focus of this grant is to reduce the concentration
of stormwater-related non-point source pollution, including
fecal coliform, currently entering the streams in the
watershed. Effort will also be devoted to investigating
the nature of flooding in the watershed. Click
here for a map of the watershed.
Non-point
source pollution is diffuse contamination generated by
both animals and humans during day to day activities.
Categories of non-point source pollution include pesticides
and fertilizers, sediment, drops of automobile fluids,
and animal waste. For more information on the topic of
non-point source pollutions, visit the NJDEP
and USEPA
websites.
Township
residents can perform simple maintenance tasks to assist
in protecting the streams. For more information regarding
these maintenance tasks, referred to as Best Management
Practices (BMPs) visit the NJDEP
BMP website.
GSE
is requesting that watershed residents provide any information
that they have regarding water quality and flooding in
the Black Creek watershed. They have prepared a survey
questionnaire for residents to complete, including
project contact information.
Regularly
scheduled quarterly meetings will be held for the duration
of the two year project. Meeting schedules and agendas
will be posted on this web site. For more information,
