Township Projects
Town Bike Path Updates

Township Projects:

June 27, 2007
The Township Engineer has applied for funding in the amount of $150,000 through the DOT Funds to connect the Bike Path with the schools on Sammis Road. The Board of Education has passed a letter of support at their last meeting. This loop was in the conceptual stages, but because of the funding criteria, we will receive a more positive review of our application if we build the path that connects the school system.

We have finally received approval to transverse a small area of buffer from the DEP. This will allow us to continue with our final negotiations with the builder of the property to construct the portion of the bike path from the Maple Grange Bridge to the park.

The bike path is open, but more work still needs to be done. Signs, rules and gates will be added soon. Anticipated ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled to happen sometime in October 2006.

John Logan, Louis Kneip, Don Teolis, Gary Gardner, and Cory Stoner from Pellow Associates. discuss the plans for the bike path.

The Phase II bikepath will provide connection from Canal Road proceed onto Maple Grange Road for less than 1000 feet, continue on old Masker Road Right-Of-Way where it will cross over Maple Grange Road entering the new Maple Grange Park and ending at Vernon Crossing Road. Phase I of the bikeway, which was completed in 2004, begins at a loop from Meadowburn Road and Prices Switch Road and extends to Canal Road.

The bike path traverses some of Vernon’s most beautiful lands, including farmland, open space, and residential areas.

The Township Council, at their August 22, 2005 regular meeting, awarded a contract to Harold E. Pellow and Associates to design and prepare the specs for Phase II bike path. Construction should begin sometime in the spring.

Watch for completion of Phase III and possibly IV in 2006.

Vernon Township is happy to announce that Phase I for bikepaths has been completed. An enormous amount of time and effort has been given to building this particular bikepath. The 3.5-mile-long bikepath provides paved routes from New York State line to Meadowburn Road where it branches off to Prices Switch Road then onto Canal Road. On Meadowburn Road there is a park bikepath that allows bikers to take a break and hike the Appalachian Trail. Watch for the completion of Phases II, III, and IV of bikepaths.

At completion, the new bike path system will be connected to Warwick, New York's proposed bike path system, Vernon's proposed Town Center and Municipal Park, and will extend through various other scenic areas throughout the township.

The Township has received a total of $350,000 in grants for the construction of bike paths. Vernon's Bike Path system is designed to work in tandem with the new "Greenway Corridor" depicted in the township's Open Space Plan.

On October 26, 2003 the Township Council is planning a ceremonial groundbreaking that will be held on Canal Road. The ceremony will begin at 2 PM. Residents are invited to attend and help celebrate this momentous occasion.
