At
one time Vernon Township contained four village centers
within it - Vernon Village, Glenwood, McAfee, and Canisteer.
Vernon Village is now our Town Center. It is located in
the center of the Township and is the place residents
are referring to if they say they are going into "town."
It is also the home of the Municipal Center. And while
perhaps not the bustling communities of their own which
they once were, Glenwood and McAfee still exist in the
western portion of the township - Glenwood to the north
and McAfee to the south. And, with their post offices,
many Vernon residents still "reside" in Glenwood
and McAfee. Canisteer, however, no longer exists on a
map, nor does its buildings.
Aside
from the Town Center, Glenwood, and McAfee, Vernon is
home to many lake communities. The Highland Lakes, Barry
Lakes, Cliffwood Lake, High Breeze, Lake Conway, Lake
Wanda, Laurel Lake, and Lake Wildwood communities are
all located "on the mountain," while the residents
of Lake Glenwood, Lake Panorama, Lake Pochung, Lake Wallkill,
Pleasant Valley Lake, Scenic Lakes, and Vernon Valley
Lake live "in the valley."
Great
Gorge Village, or "the condos," is Vernon's
condominium community which is also "in the valley,"
located at the base of the ski slopes in between Mountain
Creek's north and south lodges.
