Record Bureau's Frequently Asked Questions
When is the records bureau open?
Monday through Thursday, 8am until 4:00pm. Friday, 8:30am
to 8:30pm.
What information do I need to locate my report?
Name, date, place, and type of report (i.e.: accident,
criminal mischief). If you have approximate information,
we can still assist you, but it may require more time
to locate your report. Officers generally supply residents
with a card that has the date and report number as well
as the officer's name on it.
Do I have to pay for copies?
Yes. If you pick up your copy at the office the fee is
.75 a page for the first 10 pages, then .50 a page for
the next 10 pages. If the copy is mailed, the first to
third page is $5 and each additional page is $1. All fees
are paid in advance.
Can
you fax my report?
Reports are not faxed as a normal course of business.
Why
can't I pick up a copy of my report on the same or next
day?
Reports are written by the responding officers, then reviewed
and approved by a supervisor. The process normally takes
3 to 5 days to complete. The report is then sent to the
records bureau for release.
NOTE: Reports involving open investigations, juveniles,
or that involved indictable offenses will not be released
by the records bureau. Your request will be directed to
the proper authority.
When
can I be fingerprinted?
Fingerprinting is done on Fridays ONLY. Please call ahead
and advise us when you would like to come in. Please have
the fingerprint cards with you and a form of identification.
How
can I get a NJ Firearms Identification Card or Permit
to Purchase?
First, you must be a Vernon Township resident. You can
pick up an application at the records bureau during regular
business hours. The clerk will explain the entire procedure
to you at that time, or you may call and obtain this information.
The forms are easier to explain when you and the clerk
can go over them together.
