I want to register to vote. What guidelines should
I follow?
Voter registration in New Jersey is permanent except when
the voter has moved from the County in which he has registered.
A voter who moves within the same election district remains
registered and may be allowed to vote for two years.
If
a voter moves within the County at least 29 days prior
to an election, voter must file a Change of Address notice
with the County Board of Elections.
Voters
who move within the County within the 29 days preceding
the election, may vote at their new polling place by means
of a "Failsafe Ballot."
When
must I register to vote to be eligible to vote in the
next election?
You may register at any time prior to the 29th day before
any election.
Where
do I go to register to vote?
At the Vernon Township Municipal Clerk's Office. At the
Sussex County Board of Elections. At any Motor Vehicle
Office or Welfare Office. I cannot appear in person to
register.
Can
I register by mail?
Yes, by contacting any of the above locations and requesting
a mail-in registration form.
When
are the primary and general elections?
The Primary Election is held on the first Tuesday after
the first Monday in June. The General Election is held
on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
Primary
election: How do I change my party affiliation?
A Party Declaration Form must be filled out. This form
can be obtained from the County Clerk or the Municipal
Clerk.
Can
I receive an absentee ballot?
You may apply for an absentee ballot if:
You expect to be out of the State.
You are in resident attendance at school.
You are physically unable to vote.
You are observing a religious holiday.
By nature of the hours of employment, you unable to vote.
What
if I am in the military?
Military personnel and dependents may vote by military
absentee ballot if:
You are in the Military Service.
You are a spouse or dependent of someone in the military.
You are a patient in a VA Hospital.
You are a civilian attached to the Armed Services.
When is the last day to apply for an absentee ballot?
If mailed, no later that 7 days before the Election. If
delivered in person to the County Clerk's Office, 4 Park
Place, Newton, NJ, no later than 3:00 p.m. the day before
the election.
Where
do I vote?
Before the election, you will receive a Sample Ballot
in the mail which will give you the location of your Polling
Place and the District Number.
What
time are the polls open?
Primary and General Elections- 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
School Board Election- 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
