Tax Appeal Information

Posted: February 1, 2012

Have you received your assessment postcard and disagree with your property’s 2012 tax assessment? You can file a tax appeal with the Sussex County Board of Taxation.

Before running out and filing an appeal, it is suggested that you review the property record card to make sure it is accurate. This can be done at the Vernon assessor’s office located at 21 Church Street. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is open during the lunch hour, providing there is more than one person in the office that day.

To learn more about the tax appeal process and obtain the necessary forms, visit the county tax board’s Tax Appeal Information page. The deadline for filing an appeal this year is April 2, 2012. Keep in mind that the burden of proof rests with the taxpayer and in order to emerge victorious, the property owner must prove that the assessed value is unreasonable compared to market value.
