Ordinance Prohibits Parking on Snow Covered Roads

Posted: January 21, 2012

With winter upon us, we'd like to remind residents and property owners that parking on Vernon streets is not permitted when there is snow or ice accumulation.

This prohibition exists to ensure that the flow of traffic is not impeded and that plowing/salting/sanding operations can be conducted in a safe and efficient manner. Vehicles which hinder this may be ticketed or removed by police.

Shoveling snow into the roadways is also prohibited. If you hire contractors to clear your driveway, please advise them not to push snow into the street.

Thank you for your cooperation.

§ 99-12. Snow and other emergencies.
Whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway or an ice condition exists and salt/sanding procedures must be followed, an emergency shall exist, and no vehicle shall be parked on either side of the street, road or highway or portions thereof, within Vernon Township. This prohibition shall remain in effect until after the snow/ice has ceased and until all streets are plowed/sanded sufficiently so parking does not interfere with the flow of traffic.

§ 500-22. Placing snow, mud and other materials in streets and similar areas prohibited.
No person shall plow, shovel, blow, or otherwise move any snow, ice, mud, earth, stones or other material into any municipal road, street, ditch, gutter, storm sewer or culvert in the Township of Vernon.
