Gang Awareness Program

The Sussex County Community-Based Gang Task Force will present Gang Awareness 101 on Friday, April 19, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the McNeice Auditorium, Sussex County Technical School, Route 94 in Sparta. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m.

This program is open to municipal officials, educators and interested members of the community. Light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Presentations will be made by Lieutenant Edwin Torres, investigative agent with the Organized Crime/Street Gang Unit of the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation along with Detective Kim Baeli of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Attendees will learn:

  • Local and statewide trends
  • General warning signs of gang affiliation
  • Why kids join gangs
  • Brief history of gangs
  • Gang markings—colors, symbols, clothing as gang identifiers
  • Gangs in schools and popular culture
  • Gang graffiti, paraphernalia and language
  • Advice for educators, law enforcement and parents on helping teens avoid gangs
