FEMA Assistance Available after Hurricane Sandy

Posted: November 20, 2012

Vernon residents affected by Hurricane Sandy who have questions about recovery programs can visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) local Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) located at Sussex County Community College, 1 College Hill Road in Newton.

As of Monday, November 26, the DRC will be open on a rotating schedule for a period of three days at a time—Monday, December 3 to Wednesday, December 5 and Thursday, December 13 to Saturday, December 15—from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

According to FEMA, DRCs are set up for residents to be able to speak one-on-one to recovery representatives, but it is not necessary to visit a center to receive disaster assistance.

Before going to a DRC, it is helpful to register with FEMA online at disasterassistance.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585). Individuals may also register by smart phone at m.fema.gov.

FEMA program specialists at the centers include mitigation specialists who provide information and answer questions about cost-effective rebuilding and repair techniques to reduce property damage in future disasters.
