Trunk or Treat 2019

Join us for Vernon’s Trunk or Treat at Vernon Township High School on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Parents, decorate your car trunk and fill it with candy to hand out to participating trick-or-treaters. Admission is free but don’t forget to bring candy for treating!
Cars may begin to arrive at 5:00 p.m. and must be parked by 5:30 p.m. in the designated area. There will be music and games for the children between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., while the parents decorate their vehicles. The costume parade will start at 6:00 p.m. and “trunk or treating” will follow the parade.

Fall Hiking Program

Embrace and enjoy the beauty of nature’s kaleidoscope as we transition into cooler weather by joining the Vernon Township Board of Recreation for free guided fall hikes on Vernon’s scenic trails! Beginners welcome!
We will meet at 8:00 a.m. and plan for a 1–2 hour easy paced hike…fun for the whole family. For those feeling a little more adventurous, information will be provided for you to extend the hike and go further!
What to bring:
- sturdy shoes
- bug repellent
- energy snack

Get Rid of Bulky Waste Items in October

The Clean Communities program will be hosting a bulky waste clean-up day on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the DPW complex located on Riggs Way in Vernon Township from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This free event is being held for Vernon Township residents only. Please bring proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill for verification.
Bulky items that will be accepted include the following:
- tires—4 per household (no tires accepted on rims)
Items that will not be accepted include the following:
- truck tires
- construction debris
- hazardous waste type items
- paint, paint thinners, etc.
- electronics (bring to SCMUA for disposal)
Brush will also be accepted at this time free of charge, however, it must be separated from bulky waste items. Leaves will not be accepted. DPW employees will be available to assist residents.

The cost of flu vaccine is $20, free to those with Medicare Part B (bring Medicare card and any supplemental/secondary cards). There is no out-of-pocket fee for those insured with any Blue Cross Blue Shield plan (bring insurance card). No other type of insurance is accepted. Payment may be made by cash or check made payable to County of Sussex.

5K Turkey Trot

Come join the fun at Vernon’s Third Annual 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, 2019 (rain or shine).
The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Holy Counselor Lutheran Church at 68 Sandhill Road in Vernon. Check-in and bib pick-up will start at 7:00 a.m.
The fee is $25.00 for early registration and $30.00 for race day registration. Register by October 31, 2019 and receive a free t-shirt.
Race proceeds will benefit the Harvest House. Be sure to bring a non-perishable item to donate.

Lyme & Tick-Borne Disease Conference

Join Sussex County Community College and the Tick Squad on Saturday, October 5, 2019, for an educational day promoting awareness about a common Northwest New Jersey (NWNJ) health issue: tick-borne diseases.
This free event is open to the public and will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the college’s Performing Arts Center on its main campus in Newton.
