2018 Summer in the Mountains Sidewalk Art Festival

The first annual Summer in the Mountains Sidewalk Art Festival will take place Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon at Maple Grange Park in Vernon (rain date August 4th).

This free family event, brought to you by the Vernon Township Board of Recreation and the Vernon Township Arts Advisory Committee, will feature music, face painting and an art show in the pavilion.

Bring your chalk and your creativity and help turn the walking path at Maple Grange Park into a masterpiece! There will be a contest for the drawings with prizes for 1st place in each category. Registration required for judging purposes; download the registration form .

Electronic Waste Recycling Day

The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) will be conducting an electronic waste recycling event on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its facilities located at 34 South Route 94 in Lafayette. This program is available to Sussex County residents, businesses, school districts and municipalities.

According to the SCMUA, it holds this type of disposal event to keep hazardous materials and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, nickel and cadmium—commonly found in household electronics—from polluting our environment.

Examples of acceptable e-waste items:

  • computers
  • monitors
  • laptops
  • computer peripherals such as keyboards and mice
  • fax machines
  • VCRs
  • DVD & CD players
  • copiers
  • printers
  • televisions
  • radios
  • stereo equipment
  • cell phones

Residents may bring up to five electronic items for disposal free of charge per vehicle. For larger quantities, please consult the SCMUA website or contact them at 973.579.6998.

Upcoming Road Projects

The Sussex County Division of Public Works will be undertaking a county-wide crack sealing program beginning June 11, 2018.

Work will be conducted from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. under single lane closures with flagging operations. Motorists should expect delays.

County route segments in the work queue:

  • CR 519 Newton - McDanolds Corner Road
  • CR 519 Branchville - Lawsons Corner Road

  • CR 565 Glenwood - Martin Station Road
  • CR 603 Springdale - Flat Iron Farm Road
  • CR 609 Indian Mohawk Trails

Also scheduled to begin June 11, 2018 are temporary repairs to the bridge on CR 515 (Vernon Stockholm Road). Work is expected to take 2 to 3 weeks.

According to the Sussex County Division of Engineering, single lane flagger controlled work zones will be used during construction, as required, to facilitate construction of the repairs.
