Independence Day Fireworks

The annual fireworks display sponsored by the Vernon and Highland Lakes fire departments will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Lounsberry Hollow Middle School on Sammis Road.

The gates will open at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 for a family or group of four.

Come out, support your local fire departments and enjoy food, music and fun for all ages! Rain date will be July 1 or the next clear night.

Vernon Day & Food Truck Festival 2018

Mark your calendars and plan on attending this year’s Vernon Day & Food Truck Festival on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at its new location on Sammis Road in the field between Glen Meadow Middle School and Cedar Mountain Primary School.

Vernon Day will run from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will feature food trucks, local vendors, free bounce houses, demonstrations, music and other fun events along with shopping and tasty treats for purchase.

Come on out and share a beautiful day with your community! The event is sponsored by Vernon Township and the Vernon PAL. Rain date is Sunday, June 10, 2018.

Community Appreciation Day

The Pochuck Valley Fire Department’s Community Appreciation Day will take place Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 13 Lake Walkill Road.

In addition to the following activities, members will be on hand to talk to interested residents about volunteering as a firefighter/fire police/EMS/fire auxiliary.

  • learn about our tools and gear
  • ask a firefighter (Q&A)
  • blood drive
  • various firefighting demonstrations
  • EMS demonstrations/Q&A
  • safe & sound animal rescues
  • activities for children

Household Hazardous Waste Program

The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) will be conducting a household hazardous waste event on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its facilities located at 34 South Route 94 in Lafayette.

On this date, residents can bring for disposal up to 100 pounds of dry household hazardous waste materials and/or 10 gallons of liquid waste free of charge.

According to the SCMUA, it holds this type of disposal event to keep pollutants and toxins that would otherwise find their way into landfills and the leachate generated out of the waste stream.

Acceptable materials include the following:

  • lead based paints
  • oil based paints
  • stains
  • varnish
  • paint thinner
  • muriatic acid
  • sulfuric acid
  • roofing tar
  • old gasoline
  • ammonia
  • lighter fluid
  • kerosene
  • solvents
  • photo chemicals
  • printing ink
  • mercury
  • fuel oil
  • pesticides
  • insectides
  • brake fluid
  • lubricants
  • rust remover
  • chlorine
  • turpentine
  • driveway sealer
  • oil tank fluid
