New Business—2013 Event Calendar

Winter Blizzard—February 18

Discussion of event determined that there was too much work to be done in order to hold event. Mary Bradley motioned to postpone event until 2013, seconded by Raeline Kennedy. Motion carried unanimously. Determined that a committee would need to begin work on this event in October 2013.

Earth Fest—April 19

Discussion regarding if the Recreation Board should be involved and what the purpose of a booth would be for the board. Denise Urbaniak will contact Margaret Kranz for more details and report back at the next meeting.

Memorial Day Parade—May 28

Decision made not to have a float in the parade. Decided the Recreation Board will be stationed along the parade route and hand out mini flags and information about upcoming events such as Vernon Day and National Night Out.

Vernon Day—June 10th

Event will be held at Maple Grange. This year additional food vendors are needed. Recreation Board will reach out to other non-profit organizations such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, sports organizations, etc., to determine if there is interest in running a food booth. This year a packet will be available containing all the information and necessary paperwork needed for food handlers.

National Night Out—August 7

Event will be held at Maple Grange Park. Plans are to have a DJ, prizes and food. This year we are applying for the “365 Day” grant which requires a community service event which benefits the town. We currently plan on hosting a Spring Clean-Up at Veterans’ Memorial Park, i.e. “The Flats.”

Holiday Tree Lighting—December 1

Other Events

Battle of the Bands—to be held at the Rickey Farm. Two dates, May 12 and May 19. The top two bands will win the opportunity to open for the Misfits concert. Emilie Vichiconti will coordinate a concert date with the Misfits band.

In addition to the above events the Recreation Board will also be working with the PAL on the following events: Spring Fun Day in April, Fishing Derby in May, Halloween event in October.

Old Business

Floral arrangement went well but only a few children attended. Mary Bradley expressed the desire to give Eva more chances to work with children at future events.

Highland Lakes Fire Department will be hosting a Youth Karaoke Night be held on either Friday, January 27 or Saturday, January 28 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. for ages 14-17.

Discussion from Members

Denise Urbaniak asked about the status of the Maple Grange snack bar. She went on to state that after talking to several people involved in town sports organizations that her opinion is that the leagues should still be allowed to use the snack bar at both Maple Grange and at The Flats as a fundraising opportunity. In the future there should be a contract between the town and the organizations applying to use the snack bars which includes responsibilities of the leagues and a fee to the town which would cover the cost of utilities and maintenance.

Meeting adjourned at 9:37 p.m.
