Old Business
Kadish Farm
Ms. Kadish passed out a copy of the application to the HPC members and discussed some of the highlights and history of the property.
Cedar Crest Farm aka Parker/Cisco Farm
Mr. Hanke reported that he discussed with Ms. Ford the safety issue with regard to placing a historic marker on the property near a blind curve on the road. Ms. Ford agreed there may be an issue and agreed to relocate the sign to the front of the water trough making it possible for someone to pull into the driveway to read the sign.
Mr. Bates suggested taking a vote on the wordage for the marker due to Mayor Marotta advising him to go ahead and do so prior to the application going before the town council so that the sign can be installed. The members discussed the wording for the marker.
Motion: Mr. Borisuk made a motion to approve of the corrections suggested to the wording for the marker. Mr. Sokolewicz seconded the motion. All were in favor.
New Business
Vernon Inn
Mr. Bates asked the members if this structure could possibly fall into an application process? Ms. Kadish advised that Ron DuPont quotes the building, which was built in 1830s, as being the oldest continuing business establishment in Vernon Township. Ms. Kadish also feels that the property has a great location for a historical marker. The members discussed whether or not a building that has had major renovations should be designated as historic. Mr. Laabs suggested that the location might be deemed as historical. Mr. Bates will contact the owner of the building to discuss designating the property and building.
Kampe House
Mr. Hanke commented that there is a house (Kampe house) in Highland Lakes on Canistear Road at the intersection of Cherry Ridge Road, which is on the HPC list of possible structures for memorialization and should be memorialized. He feels that the owners of this house should also be contacted. Mr. Hanke asked for a volunteer to do the research on the house and contact the owners. Mr. Sokolewicz volunteered.
Status of Cemeteries
Mr. Bates recapped that approximately 11 cemeteries have been designated as historic on the town level. Ms. Kadish suggested having some sort of name plate at each of the cemeteries. Mr. Hanke suggested having generic brass discs made to be placed on posts at each cemetery that could say “this cemetery has been recognized by the Vernon Twp. Historic Commission as being historically significant.”
Ms. Kadish submitted the completed Canistear Cemetery application to Mr. Bates and the board members.
Motion: Mr. Laabs made a motion to approve of the Canistear Cemetery application. Mr. Hanke seconded the motion. All were in favor.
