Minutes: May 24, 2007

Meeting was called to order by Donna Wilson at 7:19 p.m.

Statement of Compliance

The following statement of compliance was read by Donna Wilson. Pursuant to the Open Public Meetings Act, Chapter 231, P.L. 1975 adequate notice as defined in Section 3D of Chapter 231, P.L. 1975 has been forwarded to the New Jersey Herald and published on February 5, 2007. Notice is also posted on the bulletin board and filed with the office of the Township Clerk.

Roll Call of Members

The roll call of members was called and Charles Bates, Charles Blessing, Andrew Borsiuk, Dolores Dobbs, Dick Wetzel, Christopher Hanke, and Donna Wilson answered the call.

Meeting Opened to the Public

Carol Gunn Kadish, Vernon resident, appeared on behalf of the Vernon Historical Society to invite the HPC to attend the rededication of the Dekay Cemetery. Ms. Kadish further advised that the Dekay family is interested in historic designation of the cemetery.

Donna Wilson responded that the Dekay Cemetery is included in the list of cemeteries proposed for designation. The list will be submitted for designation in its entirety once determined that all information is complete and accurate.

Approval of Minutes

Donna Wilson made a motion to approve the April 26, 2007 minutes; Andrew Borsiuk seconded the motion.

Hank Capro

Charles Bates made a motion to hold a moment of silence in memory of Henry “Hank” Capro; Donna Wilson seconded the motion.

Old Business

Board of Education Building

Charlie Blessing advised he attended the PB meeting and the resolution for historic designation is on their agenda, but is on hold. Fred Suljic is planning a meeting with the PB attorney. Charles Bates volunteered to attend the meeting.

Longwell/Drew Cemetery

Charlie Blessing advised the resolution was approved by the PB and will be forwarded to the town council.

Status of County Sign

Donna Wilson advised that the county has ordered a repair kit to correct the misspelling. The county advised it is unlikely they can lower the height of the sign.

2007 HPC Budget

The HPC discussed the budget and the amount required for the recording secretary’s salary.

New Business

Van Dokenberg Property

Donna Wilson advised that the state has purchased the Van Dockenberg property which backs up to the Black Creek site.

Relocation of Eligible Houses

Donna Wilson advised she contacted the state regarding eligibility for designation if a structure is relocated. The response was a relocated building can still be eligible for listing if the original significance was architecture or if the building was on its new location for 50 plus years it also may be eligible. In any case, the new location should duplicate the original location.

If the reason for significance was related to an event, person or history and architecture is secondary than it will not be eligible once relocated.

Vernon Historical Society Office

Dolores Dobbs advised the HPC about an article in the Advertiser News which reported the mayor and the town council were anticipating relocating the Historical Society office to a location other than the municipal building.

Vernon 20/20

Charlie Blessing advised he e-mailed Valerie Seufert advising that Charles Bates will be the HPC liaison to the Vernon 20/20.

Cemetery List

Donna Wilson advised she has not received a response from Bob Longcore.

Adjournment

There being no further items of business for the Regular Meeting, a motion was made by Christopher Hanke to adjourn the meeting; Charles Bates seconded the motion. The regular meeting of the Vernon Township Historic Preservation Commission was adjourned at 8:52 p.m.
