Glenwood Historic Area Sign
The commission members discussed what “points” should appear on the sign. When all was said, most people agreed that Pochuck Farms, Apple Valley Inn, Glenwood Grist Mill, Glenwood Blacksmith Shop and Captain Bailey’s Homestead site should be eliminated. Most agreed that there should be a brass sign with the following statement: “Welcome to Glenwood (North Vernon), a historic area.”
Mr. Laabs indicated that he had attended a meeting in Byram, NJ. regarding historic renovation. He indicated that while in attendance historic commissions do not need to be concerned over what windows, doors, or style of architecture a homeowner needs to address in the restoration of his/her home. This needs further research as this does not match the Vernon Township ordinance for historic preservation.
Status of Old Post Office Building on Canistear Road–Steve Sokolewicz
Tabled until next meeting.
Cedar Crest Farm Site
Mr. Bates met with Marlene Ford, owner, to discuss location of marker. She agreed to the location on March 19, 2013. This location was subsequently passed to the DPW for installation. Hopefully, this marker will be completed by the middle of April 2013.
Mr. Bates discussed the issue with the mayor in directing demolition notices to the HPC for review. At this moment, notices are not sent to the HPC for review. It was felt by the HPC at the February 21, 2013, meeting that since the township has lost many possible historic structures in the past, that the HPC would be a good resource for the township in helping to decide what structures to keep and/or demolish. The mayor said he would discuss this with the town council.
