Minutes: June 17, 2010

Mr. Bates called the meeting to order at 7:42 p.m.

Statement of Compliance

Pursuant to the Open Public Meetings Act, Chapter 231, P.L. 1975 adequate notice as defined in Section 3D of Chapter 231, P.L. 1975 had been forwarded to the New Jersey Herald on January 21, 2010, and published on February 10, 2010. Notice is also posted on the bulletin board and filed with the office of the Township Clerk.

Motion: Mr. Cantaldi made a motion to approve of the minutes. Mr. Wetzel seconded the motion. All were in favor.

Old Business

Master Plan

Mr. Bates advised the HPC members that there will be a Land Use Board meeting next Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. and asked that one of the HPC members be present at the meeting in order to discuss adding language to the Master Plan regarding a tax incentive for homeowners who memorialize their home as historic. Mr. Borisuk agreed to discuss this topic at the Land Use Board.

HPC Budget

Mr. Bates advised that he spoke with Ms. Kerry Scott and as of this morning the $2,000.00 that was requested for the HPC annual budget had not yet been finalized.

Status of Burnt House Hill Application

Ms. Gunn Kadish advised that she is trying to contact the NJ Historical Society in Newark to review the Rutherford papers but has had some trouble with that connection as their budget has been cut. Mr. Cantaldi suggested she check with Warwick Historical Society.

Economic Development Advisory Committee

Mr. Wetzel discussed the process and difficulties for building a new commercial building in Vernon Township. The EDAC will be trying to streamline this process.

Mr. Wetzel advised that CVS is looking to come into town and Camp Loema is looking to expand to a year-round facility. He further advised that Hidden Valley Ski area is now closed, and Quick Chek is no longer interested in the gas station property in McAfee.

There are 2 grand openings—1) Warwick Telephone sharing space with the Copy Shop and 2) A&P to promote its new handicap parking.

Applications for 6 Cemeteries—Review

Ms. Kadish asked if the application packages are placed in a booklet so that the Public could look up the information on the properties. Mr. Bates said that he believes the packages are kept by the Township Clerk in a book. He said Mr. Hanke has also kept a book on the memorialized properties. Ms. Kadish suggested that the packages are put into a notebook to be kept in the Vernon Library. Mr. Bates asked her to purchase a binder so that this can be done.

The HPC members reviewed the 6 cemetery applications.

Motion: Mr. Borisuk made a motion to approve of the cemetery applications with the changes discussed. Mr. Wetzel seconded the motion. All were in favor.

Mr. Cantaldi advised that one day per week, on a Tuesday or Thursday, he and Ms. Cheadle will meet to continue the cemetery application work.

New Business

Discussion on Prioritizing the 250 Other Structures for Application for Memorialization

Tabled to the next meeting.

The HPC members reviewed the compiled list of 192 sites for possible memorialization.

Hotel/Motel Tax

Mr. Bates advised that this money goes into the general fund and there is no ordinance indicating where this money goes.


Mr. Borisuk made a motion to adjourn the HPC Regular Meeting at 9:26 p.m. Mr. Wetzel seconded the motion. All were in favor.
