• Artificial Turf Fields Tested - The Vernon Township Recreation, Engineering and Health Staff was notified that another municipality in New Jersey had closed their turf fields due to a concern about high levels of lead in the turf. On May 9, 2008 the Vernon Health Department collected turf samples from the Township’s fields, including those at Maple Grange Park and the Vernon Township High School. These samples were then submitted to Garden State Labs for lead testing. Results were received from Mr. Harvey Kline, at Garden State Labs on May 29, 2008, stating that there was no detection of lead in the samples submitted from the fields at Maple Grange Park or the High School. The Township would like to take this time to thank all the staff and outside consultants that worked so diligently to ensure the safety of the Township’s residents.

Reval Progress - The inspectors are now canvassing and inspecting through map #15. It may be difficult to report immediately on the locations inspections are in progress as there are more data collectors now working in Vernon Township, and they are moving ahead more quickly than expected. Photos, numbers, etc. of the inspectors can be found in this printable PDF file. Feel free to call the assessing office if you have concerns or questions.

Please be advised the reval company will not make appointments prior to arriving in your area of the municipality. If you should lose your hang tag requesting you to make an appointment, you may call Realty Appraisal Company at phone number 201-867-3870. All other communication should be directed to the assessing office at this time. (PDF)

• Artificial Turf Fields - In light of recent reports regarding health concerns about artificial turf fields, Vernon Township immediately began an investigation of the three (3) Township owned turf fields. The first two fields were constructed by Sportexe in 2005 and are currently in use. They contain a rubber infill, Omni Grass Premier 41. The third field, currently under construction, was constructed by General Sports Venue. This is also a rubber infill field, Astroturf Gameday Grass XPe.

According to the specifications and statements from both Manufacturers, neither product utilizes nylon, and the turf and infill are made of lead-free materials. Vernon Township is currently awaiting guidance from the State Health Department as to what, if any, additional steps need to be taken at this time. Individuals interested in obtaining more information or copies of Manufacturer’s literature should contact Township Engineer Lou Kneip at 973-764-4055, ext. 2222, or Recreation Director Pat Seger at 973-764-6607..

Township Revaluation - The resident letters of the intent to begin the revaluation for the Township of Vernon were mailed Thursday, February 28, 2008. The revaluation firm of Realty Appraisal Company will begin the inspections and the photos of the structures with blocks 10-90 possibly as early as Thursday, March 13th. Each inspector will have a letter from the Township as well as a photo ID. Do not allow anyone in your home without these credentials. All information is on file with both the Vernon Township Police Department and the Vernon Township Assessing Department. The inspections will take place in 2008, with the revaluation effective as of January 1, 2009.

For a further overview of the revaluation, please feel free to view the presentation given by Municipal Assessor Lynne Schweighardt at the June 25, 2007 Township Council Meeting. As more information is gathered, that information will be disseminated to residents via this website. (PDF)

• Road Work - Work is currently being done on several road projects in and around the Town Center which may cause residents traffic delays and changes to their normal routes. A road project currently causing delays is the work being done on Route 94 to fix a dangerous intersection and add a traffic signal at Sandhill Road, widen Rt 94, and fix drainage issues. Route 94 is a State road. The State schedules the timing of these projects well in advance, sets working hours, and contracts out its manpower for projects like this one. Expect delays or use Rt 517 or Rt 515 to bypass the work area. While these simultaneous road projects may cause temporary traffic congestion, when completed Township residents will find a safer commute.
